The original doom rocked! Many modern FPS's wouldn't be here if it wasn't for Doom.

Doom II also was a great classic. But Doom III was pure *poop* angry.gif
CrazyGilbert
Yeah, when I was a kid I used to play doom all the time. I remembered the pinkies all too well.....
Dark0ne
Doom 2 was the first FPS I played multiplayer on the PC -- LAN game was so fun and just so..original, for the time.

I'm assuming you're talking about them floating pink monsters that hover around?

Strangely, when I play Doom now, I think what am I shooting at, because the graphics are so bad I don't know what's happening! rolleyes.gif

Heres a Picture of the pinky (doesnt look like that in game) user posted image

Like the good `ol Doom Music? go Here
Morbid_Pathologist
hmm, i just extracted the music from the main game files and converted them to a .mp3 file....and i never listened to them...

but yeah, doom 1 shareware was the first game i had ever played, then we bought it, found out that doom2 was on a CD, so we got to use our new triple speed cd drive =P, the good old 486 100mhz

if you have the time, buy the collectors edition, $10 australian, you get both + the mission disks (or download it, i dont care, but im not telling you how =P) and download jdoom, its a program that completely changes the game, add's opengl support, gives the game some flashy effects like proper colored lights, mouse support, corona's, more blood, its a great addition...plus theres so many good mods out for doom1/2

(doom3 doesnt count, its an abomination =\)
CrazyGilbert
Doom1 Shareware where? I want to get it free (have not played that since I had a windows 95) which was when I played it in 1995.

where?
Stanhead
I might just re-install Doom 2... grin.gif
CrazyGilbert
Nevermind I found free doom1 now I am gonna buy doom 3 ( the full version noth the demo)
Stanhead
I've heard too many bad things about Doom 3, so I won't buy it. I think I'll download the demo though, just to see if these rumours from the Half Life community are true.

(Yes, I know a HL2 community WOULD say bad things about Doom 3)
CrazyGilbert
Im a big halo fan and I havnt heard of anything bad...whats the big deal with it?
Stanhead
I don't know, I haven't played it because of what a few people have told me... tongue.gif

I don't like Halo either. rolleyes.gif
Morbid_Pathologist
steer clear of doom3 if you loved the originals, and dont set foot near it if you loved Painkiller (the expansion doesnt count)...ive learnt my lesson
Stanhead
Thanks for the warning, but it's too late. I've already got Doom III.

It's crap. user posted image

well, I`m going off to play the demo for myself and see

Did anyone ever play Barney Doom? I think it was an unofficial patch or something, the game was completely normal up until the second-to-last level, when there were purple and green dinosaurs who threw fireballs, jumped huge distances, killed you in one swipe of their claws and generally made your gaming life much shorter, abiet in a hilarious way.

Ah, if only more games would take corruptions of kid's TV characters and put them to use killing stuff, the world would be a better place.
CrazyGilbert
yeah, I totally remember this mod for doom!! hehehe that was a while ago...I remember there being other ones but it was a while ago.

I learned that if you download doom1 shareware on modern computers it does work! if you dont officially have dos open up the run tab on the start menu and type: cmd

I was a complete n00b in my days of playing Doom, and I didn't even have an internet connection on my PC, so I never heard of Barney Doom.

Back in the days me and my Dad would take turns playing Doom or Alien Trilogy.

I'm pretty dissappointed with the direction things went, as the developers got more freedom they started sacrificing the fun and interest factor in games for realism.
I really didn't care that the levels in doom made no sense what so-ever, they were freaky they were cool they played fun.

Now it has all gotta be lobbies, and office buildings, and warehouses and boring boring boring!

I want my Ziggurat Vertigo's, and other completely bizzare level design which was done for fun and coolness rather than seeing that yes the developer can make a realistic office environment which will convince me that people would normally work here Monday to Friday if it hadn't been infested with zombies (actually sounds very much like a normal office environment)

(sorry about the rant)

I didn't play Doom very much. It's kindaa boring. You just walk through hallways and sometimes on Mars, but that's it.

HOW COULD YOU SAY SOMETHING LIKE THAT ohmy.gif ohmy.gif ohmy.gif !?! Are you outta yar rabblin'-ass mind wacko.gif !? C'mon, guy! Anyone who's someone has to have played DOOM at least ONCE. I never used to get ANYTHING done when it came out. I STILL don't get anything done cuz of it!

And how could you say it's "boring"? Are you blind!? That was the "golden age" of gaming IMHO, and it's still one of id's greatest legends. Games like Quake, Halo, GoldenEye, Unreal Tournament, or even TES might not be around if DOOM hadn't been developed. Think about it, you might surprise yourself.

On a side note, the reason I include TES in this list is because ever since Daggerfall (forgive me if this is incorrect, as I don't really know much about Arena), the series has been in first-person perspective, albeit slightly different from your standard run-of-the-mill FPS game, but nonetheless TES has been influenced by FPS games in one way or another.

Anyway, I still love DOOM, no matter how old it gets. Besides, I use Doomsday to play all the old WADs. I'd recommend using that engine to play DOOM, since you can play in 3D environments, and use 3D models instead of the old 2D sprites, thanks to it being OpenGL- and Direct3D-capable (use OpenGL if you can, since Direct3D is slower).

Man, playing the original Doom hurts my eyes too much. I have it on snes, and wow do those graphics blow chunks. But the gameplay was good. You control the horizontal, the game controls the vertical. Imagine if aiming was that easy today? And yet Doom was STILL hard to beat.

Not to sound mean, but you're kidding right? right? blink.gif All of the console doom versions were horrid in graphics and even stuff was changed (missing monsters, graphics, etc). Plus it wasn't a hard game. Most people can play it on the keyboard only and get through the first 2 diffs. I'm only OK at shooters and I can beat it on nightmare without too much difficulty...

Plus the beauty of the doomsday engine by SkyJake makes the game actually play on higher resolutions. I turn off all the 3d models for that old school feel still though. smile.gif

WoW!
Okay, I'm putting Oblivion away, deeeeep inside my locker. Amazing!
(Am I the only one that completed the original Doom (I) with a 800x600 screen resolution? Sometimes I had trouble finding the switches ^^ smile.gif

Oh yes, Wolfenstein biggrin.gif ! How could I have forgotten this true classic. I know there may have been other FPS games out before Wolf, but IT took the FPS genre down the road it's on today. DOOM only improved what Wolf brought to the dinner table. Thnx for pointin that out to me, Marxist ßastard happy.gif .

BTW, the Doomsday Engine perhaps is the best engine graphically, but if you want a severe case of abdominal pain from laughing too hard, then try ZDoom. A few WADs made exclusively for ZDoom are some of the funniest I've played. There's a map series called "pooWADS", supposed to be a jokewad series, featuring badly designed maps, but with rather good gameplay. You can also find mods made specifically for ZDoom on the ZDoom Wiki. Check it out if you got time.

I remember playing DOOM when I first got a computer, No other shooter has been able to even make me happy still. It deserves the most influential game of all time award and many other awards.

On the first old resolution you couldnt see anything.

Really wondering what people got against DooM 3...
I started playing the DooM Shareware in '94 and a year after that i got the full version of DooM 1 and 2, and the multiplayer i have to say is the best EVER! No other game i've played have even come near to DooM 2 when it comes to multiplayer experience!

BTW about DooM 3, i watched the progress from the minute i heard it was coming, and that was in '01 and i expected to be much different from the original doom games, since games had become a lot different since '94, and even though the mulitplayer wasn't anywhere the original IMO i still thought that the singleplayer part was excellent
Xolair
Heh, I probably played this game sometime in my childhood, can't remember too much though, same thing with Wolfenstein 3D sadly. From what I remember, was a truly great game. smile.gif

If the old graphics of doom irritate you these days maybe this will breath some life into the game:

Ah, good old Doom, I still like to play it!
I like the enhanced ZDoom engine: http://zdoom.org/
And the game that uses it best, Neodoom: http://www.doomwadstation.com/2006/neodoom/
It has new monsters and weapons, like grenades and bombs you can throw, and a bunch of other stuff you can equip from your inventory. It's really a whole new game.

I enjoyed it for the most part too. Although the monsters always attacked the same way, and appeared out of ridicules places, i found it entertaining. The pda thing didn't bother me a bit, i actually enjoyed reading the odd emails.

best FPS eva, NOLF2.
