Full Version: The great SNES

This was the system I played my first videogame on hence it is my favorite system. Am I the only one or are there others out there that still play this system? Anyways my favorite game ever is on the SNES (Chrono Trigger) which is one of the reasons I play the SNES today. If you still have one of these around tell me what games you have and if you still play it.
Switch
Unfortunately the SNES was around when I was very young, so I didn't get the maximum gameplay from it I could have... but I often enjoyed playing Yoshi's Island on it.

As for Chrono Trigger, that's a brilliant game, one of the best if not THE best RPG I've ever played. But I've only ever experienced it through emulator and ROM. For some reason they never released it over here (UK), except many years later with a batch of early FF games for the PSX. Same with Chrono Cross, and they didn't even release that within a game pack over here, which was very irritating. It was just never ever released. I can't understand their thinking behind that.

Anyway, yes I do have the SNES, but no I don't really play it anymore. I still have my old games, Yoshi's Island and Super Mario to name a couple. Mainly if I want SNES now though I tend to use emulators.

One word: Kirby grin.gif
Slaiv
FF:VI, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, etc... this was the console to own. Not to mention games like Super Street Fighter II, Tecmo Super Bowl, and Donkey Kong....

In short, the best console ever.
Chaosmaker
Let's see.....

Mario, Donkey Kong, Mario Kart, Secret of Mana, Kirby, Ninja Turtle's, and the list go's. But it's a shame that nintemdo is getting beat out by Microsoft and Playstation. In short a must own system that should never be put up ou EBay
Slaiv
True. Once I get ahold of some more cash, this is on my "must-buy" list.
CLB1110
I literally have over 100 games for my SNES. When I was little my dad would go to pawn shops and buy then for like 5 bucks each. After a while I just got more and more. Some of the best games I have are FF III, FF Mystic Quest, Mortal Kombat II and III, Super Mario World, Zombies Ate my Neighbors (this game is a classic), Street Fighter II, and many many more.
Gabbe_master
Have everyone forgot NES??? That was the first console I ever played... Super Mario Bro's 3... Memories, memories...
Dark0ne
Super Mario World -- One of my favourite games of all time. Never owned a SNES; had a Master System and Megadrive, as well as the early Atarti ST 750 (Dizzy for the w1n...if anyone remembers Dizzy the egg please tell me ;D)
Switch
Yeah... I spent countless hours on that game.

There was also a Kirby compilation... what was it called... that had some really cool stuff in it, including a kind of treasure hunter thing... another classic. :P
loveme4whoiam
The one true Mario Kart was the SNES version. My best friend had it when we were 9 and by the end of a summer we had B's engraved on our thumbs sq_yellow_smile.gif

I never played many other games apart from Yoshi's Island, which rocked, so i dont know what the SNES was like for other games. Might be worth getting a cheap one....
CLB1110
You could always get a emulator. The best one for SNES is zsnes and I think you can find it at http://www.rom-world.com Some more popular games are really hard to find though...
Peregrine
Does anyone else find it amusing that the "greatest console ever" is so old? That in all those years of progress in gaming, we still haven't made a console that is clearly better?
Dark0ne
In my opinion, it's the games that make the console, not the console that makes the games.

Ill agree with you there Peregrine. If you ask me these days games are getting crappier and crappier. It seems like everyone in the gaming industry is only in it for the $ and not because of a love of games. Kind of sad cry.gif

Replying to Darkone all I have to say is the games DO make the console good. Games like Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy III, and the Secret of Mana are what made the SNES the best system of all time.

I already have that emulator, but not many of the actual games (roms) to play on it.

I do think that the games make the console - would PC gaming be anywhere near as popular if all was made for it were awful C&C clones and bland FPS's? Of course not, and it's the same with consoles. Games that we have picked out are the best because they take the constraints of the console and work with them until you do not notice you are being contrained - in Super Mario Kart I didn't notice there were so few buttons because no more were needed. Great games do that, and they make a great console.

And I also agree with Peregrine that it is disappointing that there have been no modern consoles (or console games?) to match the SNES. Also, it is sad that Nintendo has slipped so badly in its console creation.
CLB1110
More and more people are getting into games, and most of them dont care about quality. All they care about is the newest sports game or the newest FPS. Sure gamers are getting more accepted in society, but the drop in the quality of games is horrible.
Gabbe_master
I think the problem is all the games made from movies and such. And it's allso popular to not publish the whole game at once, and instead sell lots of expansions... I dont say any name but I can tell that it starts with The... and ends with Sims...
draighox
I've never liked consoles much. The best game ever was on PC, and it was Baldur's Gate II.
Indoril Nerevar
As a computer nerd, I found it necesary to get an emulator for it, despite the fact that i one snes and love it. The out let plugin always falls out and needs elevation on my snes. I never could fix that. My favorite game would have to be Earthbound. Second would be super mario worlds.
CLB1110
I have played earthbound and have to say it is pretty entertaining. Ive got an emulator too, which one do you use?
Switch
I played Earthbound for a while on an emulator... it was kind of entertaining, but as soon as I started getting attacked by birds, the battles seemed rather stupidly difficult tongue.gif so I lost interest...
CLB1110
Thats the one thing I didnt enjoy in the game-The battles. I didnt really like the battle system, and the enemies seemed kind of stupid...
the_ragnarok702
Final Fantasy 5 best game EVER nuff said. wink.gif
CLB1110
I may not belive it to be the best game ever, but it is without question the best FF game ever.

true in my opinion there are still games that come very close to it such as chrono trigger, ff4, morrowind, OoT, seiken densetsu 3. All VERY good games.
Slaiv
I think you're all forgetting about FFVI....
Morbid_Pathologist

i remember playing that donkey kong game where you get to play as diddie and dixie, good fun.

so your saying you played them all (or 80% of them) and you say 7 is the best. Coughs*impossible*coughs The old ones are the best and anyone who has the decency to play them in general agrees.
Switch
Personally FF9 is my favourite. I have played the old ones, 1 through 6, and wasn't very impressed. They were ok, but nothing I'd rave about. I got bored of most of them partway through.

And FFVII (7). That was the best one, the graphics we're a massive leap forward from the previous one's.
CLB1110
I never really liked FF 7. The graphics looked too much like a cartoon and it didnt seem like a true FF game.
Faust_87
In my house SNES is still hooked up and fully functional... I play it almost every night... and I don't give a rats ass that I've beat the majority of games for it... I still replay them over and over... Everyone is all about the emulators now... they don't give me the same feeling that a SNES controller in my hand does...
My first system was Atari... and it had sweet games... but to basic...
Slaiv
Love FFVI and FFVII. Plus who can forget the great Tecmo Super bowl, Super Street Fighter II, Mario world, and Link to the Past?
CLB1110
Ahh ya Street Fighter II totally rules. During the day of the SNES, even though I was little I was a fan of both the Mortal Kombat and the Street Fighter series.

yes, i have played all of them except the first 3, and i merely said i liked 7 the most out of all the ones i have played, do you have a problem with that?

well i seem to think otherwise, dont just assume "anyone" will agree with you there.

I have to say the old ones were better, I loved FF5. But I also loved FF8 and I still think the newer ones are great.

I was never a fan of the arcade style fighting games... but I must say I really enjoyed Street Fighter... it was just a sweet game... sadly the movie sucked undecided.gif
CLB1110
Ya the movies did blow, but the games were great. II had to be the best of them all though...

Okay, I just skimmed the thread. I'm too tired to read everything.

I owned a SNES (two actually). In fact, I still have one stashed away someone. I still play games on ZSNES on occasion. However, we never had a lot of money so it was hard to get the cool games. I really wanted to get a copy of FFIV, but it was so hard to find anywhere that sold it. It was my first RPG.

My favourite games on the system, that I actually played on the console (not the emulator) were FFIV, FFVI, Super Mario World, Super Mario All Stars (loved the classics), Super Street Fighter II Turbo, Chrono Trigger, Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, F-Zero, and Super Metroid.
Most of those games are still great (the FFs, CT, Super Metroid, Zelda), but I'd like to add Star Ocean, Seiken Densetsu 3, and Bahamut Lagoon. I really only enjoy the RPGs now, with the occasional delve into the platformers.

SNES was NOT my first system. I can't remember if that honour belongs to NES or Atari 2600. I was young and my cousin had both systems. I've also used a Coleco.

Edit:

As for those arguing which Final Fantasy game is best, it's relative. Everyone's perspective is skewed by what they prefer in a game, what game they played first, etc. Many of us who love the old SNES (or even NES) ones best are biased because not only does the game hold an aspect of nostalgia for us, but we played these games with little thought towards graphics. When Final Fantasy VI came out, it had some of the nicest 2D artwork of any console game. Not to mention the musical score was excellent. The story was interesting and the game was easy to get in to.

If you started with a game like FF7 or FF8, it might be hard to get in to a 2D RPG. Personally, I think FF7 was great. It too was easy to pick up, had an excellent sound track, and an interesting story. At the time, it's graphics were simply amazing.

Square tries to do something new with every iteration of the Final Fantasy series:

2 implemented the idea of learning key words. I never finished this game, and it's been a while since I played it, so I don't remember what else it did. I'm pretty sure they changed the magic system from 1 though.
3 I don't know as I've never seen a translated version of it.
4 I don't think there was anything new in this game to tell you the truth. However, the story, although a little cheesy, was quite interesting. I also liked the uniqueness of the characters, rather than having the possibility of having all super characters that do the same thing.
5 brought about the idea of job classes - probably the single best system in the series (it's why I love Tactics so much grin.gif)
6 gave us an excellent story, a new way of learning magic, Magitek armor, unique abilities for each character, and a huge variety of equipment, all of which makes this my favourite grin.gif (there are a few things I'd change about this game, but nothing major)
Of course, 7 itself brought the series into the third dimension. The magic system was also beautiful (although I missed the idea of black, white, red, and blue mages).
8 emphasized the menu system, with it's very detailed junctioning system. It also introduced consumable magic. Also the idea of upgrading equipment rather than getting new equipment (I didn't like this - a combination of the two would be best, I think).
9 kind of blended the graphics of 7 and 8, using chibi style characters in 2D backdrops for cities. It also brought out the idea of magic and skills being used by means of clothing (previously seen in the likes of the Paladin Shield and Cursed Ring in FFVI).
10 gave the whole sphere grid system, which wasn't that bad. It also sort of blends the idea of finding new equipment and remodelling existing equipment, which the focus being on modifying whatever you find to suit your needs at any giving time.
10-2 undoubtedly has the best graphics. It's pretty much just a slightly polished version of 10. It modifies the grid system, and it kinda works. Unfortunately, you have to get over the stigma of playing dressup tongue.gif. It also introduces a mission based format, which I don't particularly enjoy. The voices are really annoying sometimes too. I think this game is mostly just eye candy.
11 MMO. nuff said. I havne't played it, and I don't plan to. I've played 1 other MMO which is quite boring. Until everyone that plays is a quality RPer, MMOs are not my cup of tea.
Tactics took the job classes of FF5 to the next level, and brought the series into the strategy genre. An excellent game.
Mystic Quest does not exist tongue.gif

As you can see, every game has it's perks. There isn't really a best, just which one is best for you based on what you look for in a game. I'm going to stop typing now, because I need a pee.
CLB1110
I thought 10-2 was pure crap. Out of the PS titles I enjoyed 7 the best because of the great story and interesting characters. Out of the SNES titles I had a tough decision between 3 and 5. I own 3 on a cartridge and I thought the story was very interesting, and some of the weapons were pretty cool. I emulated 5 and I thought the job system was an amazing idea, it added a whole new world of depth to the game. Anyways, thats my opinion.

Hi, i'm new...unfurtunately i've never owned a snes (still i watched my friends playing super mario all stars and i was like this shocked.gif ) so a friend passed me the emulator and a lot of games and that's all I played emulated snes games all my life...(still I love them...specially yoshi's island)...thats not all, i've got a ps2 for xmas and after 3 months i burned my own cd with an emulator of snes for the ps2 grin.gif i just turn up the ps2 and i'm playing old snes games
