Alright, I'll post something.

I've been meaning to ask something, but didn't think it was appropriate right after the Memod was announced dead. Many people have asked if the team is going to release any material so that at least it can be used for other mods. Mostly this discussion centered around models and scripts. However, there is something else I was wondering about. The Memod website featured a few music tracks that were meant to be released as some sort of 'bonus-cd'. Not all of them were on the website, just a few samples, but I loved them! I still think the music captivates the feeling of Middle-Earth in a really nice kind of way.
So my question to the team is: have you given thought to releasing the music? It might be something to remember the Memod by. If you don't plan on doing so (which I would understand, it's your material after all), could at least those few sample tracks be put back online?

Well, those tracks were created by Daerk, so that might influence the decision of the team. But alas, I don't know for sure..

*Waits and sees.*
Currently, I'm trying to get every screenshot of the mod, drawing, art, etc......... Just so I can have them. The music tracks would be good, but I can understand if you don't want to release them.
P.S. Does anyone know where Suze is?
Theta Orionis
Oct 22 2004, 06:13 PM
Yes

Suze hasn't vanished from the face of the earth - but he hasn't been able to be online much and is currently getting his internet access sorted out, I believe
Midwinter - I'm afraid those tracks are the intellectual property of the composer.... ie Daerk. Since it appears that he
has vanished without a trace there is no way we could ask him if he would grant permission for people to download the tracks. So sadly, we can't put those tracks back on the site.
However, we are currently looking into releasing a few other bits and pieces.... in some cases it's a bit time-consuming since all references which might be in breach of copyright have to be edited out.
And then there are the spin off projects - plural since I'd be surprised if there wasn't more than one, given the creativity of the MEMod members - so you may catch glimpses of MEMod here and there.

Okay, I can see the logic behind that. A pity the music is lost now, though. Ah well, at least I had one of the tracks saved on my HD.

Anyway, I read the announcement of a new project on the forums. I guess that means that the Memod book is now finally closed. Time to look to the future.

Well, as I recall it, there was a topic last year in which Daerk explained how he had made the music... he went as far as claiming he played some kind of strange instrument.
In fact, that topic is right
here. Not that it matters anymore, I suppose. I just have a feeling he really has created those tracks... despite all the apparent lies and empty promises. And if he hasn't, maybe I'd just like to think so anyway...

As others have said they're no longer property of MEMod but property of Daerk. If he were to request I remove them then I would have to - but since he sent them me himself I personally am allowed to retain them until circumstances change.
They're actually quite good. First 8 tracks are battle music, the last 8 slow down gradually into some quite nice music - very Morrowind/LotR stylee. Think Lothlorien. Think how you feel when you here the Morrowind music after just starting Morrowind for the first time in a year....yup..thats it!
Sorry!

Its interesting that the AME modders feel they are going to be able to release a legal product. Maybe someone needs to tell them so they aren't wasting their time.

That doesn't change the fact that they were shut down. Even if legal action isn't taken now, they could always be sued at any point after it's released.

They probably already know. I think they are trying to get around copyrights [which, if I remember correctly, is very hard to do] by only releasing it to team members. The kick is that, to become a team member, you need only to register on their forums and give them an idea, no matter how outlandish it may be. Don't know if they're still doing that, but I recall that's what they were planning on.

I just found this out today and I say in all honesty that it did not anger me but saddened me. You guys formed a great community around this mod and I am proud to say that at one point I was part of it. Thanks for remembering that I contributed to the mod and I hope to see equally cool things from all of you.
Anyway to anyone out there who still remembers me, drop me a line at:

I think you should use what you have, and pull a J.R.R Tolkien, and make your own world... Get someone very creative, and go for it... Screw copyrighted material, make your own material and copyright it yourself!
Go for it!!!

Then you'll be happy to know that not many of us are retiring from game modding. Project Phoenix (hosted here) has some of the former MEMod members, and others have joined various other projects. I don't know where, but I'm sure you'll get answers from someone else soon enough.
If you meant the entire team getting back together, I wouldn't bet much on it. People are already committed to different things, so getting everyone back with enough time devoted to be succesful is pretty much impossible.
edit: I believe

But nevermind. I don't have any mod powers here anyway. *Looks around to see if there are any devs to lock this*
EDIT: Oh, apparently they're keeping the MEMod threads open. So um, it's not thread necromancy actually Pov. ^^; Please don't make posts about the rules in future, just use report. Thanks.

Ya know The Memod forums sort of remind me of Moria after the Balrog came.
The Balrog in this case being the people that shut you down.
Maybe someday a great wizard will come along and bring this place back to life.
Perhaps after Oblivion is released.
Middle Earth is a kickass place but there are other worlds out there.
Maybe a world based on The Wheel of time Series by Robert Jordan.
I also really Like the idea behind The DeathGate Cycle by Weis and Hickman.
I seem to recall some small effort at making mods based on Worlds like these but something on a grand
scale like MeMod imho would Rule.
Of course you'd have to change your name but hey I'm just rambling.
Anyway Just wanted to give a shout out to anyone still kicking around.

Just to clear things up. Nobody shut the project down as such, it was a brave and difficult choice made by the team who were unwilling to compromise the awesome vision they were creating. Being the good bunch of hard working and law abiding people they were, it was with a heavy heart that they accepted what could not be argued against, without implications or by selling out their original ideas.
At least, that is what I have gathered.

I hope this project has its copyright issues sorted out, and obtained permission in writing to use Robert Jordan's world to base a mod on. Assumptions simply aren't good enough when it comes to copyright - as anyone following MEMod should know... :/
On another note, would anyone be interested in some of the MEMod design/research notes/essays? I might have the odd one kicking about on my hard drive still

Well, the circumstances aren't exactly the same as there's no-one making a commercial game of Jordan's world but I'm not holding my breadth for it being finished; I've come to see that 99% of projects of this scale die anyway. Just contributing for portfolio and the nice experience.
