The official forums has a thread on fixing a glitch with the "non-intrusive" Fallout 3 SecuROM system that is designed to ensure you're running a legit copy of the game.

Drevin over at the official forums (and Skotte here at the Nexus Forums) points people to a patch on the SecuROM site along with these helpful pointers:

Quote

Only use this patch if you are getting an unwarranted securom emulation error! This will not fix any other issue.

Edit: Making it clear.

To Install
1- Right click on your DVD drive and select explore.
2- Double click on the setup.exe located in the DVD folder you just opened.
3- Follow install instructions.

To install the patch
1- Backup your old FalloutLauncher.exe by renaming it to FalloutLauncher.exe.old (located in the Fallout 3 folder)
2- Copy the new FalloutLauncher.exe in to place.
3- Launch the game form the new FalloutLauncher.exe (The patch won't work if you try to launch from either the Fallou3.exe or the DVD-Rom)
4- Play the game.

I use Daemon Tools and I didn't get any sort of SecuROM errors. Shivering Isles also uses this same SecuROM and I had no problems with it.

I guess it's dependent on your machine.

Good thing SecuROM is doing so much to stop pirating of Fallout 3, otherwise annoying legitimate users with problems like this would be silly on Bethesda's part.

Oh wait.

360 users could pirate the 360 version over a week ago, actually. ;)

360 users have been pirating f3 since early october

Why the hell are they blaming PC users? And it doesn't make sense to have drm anyway since its always cracked and the pirated versions have the DRM removed. So all it does is hurt legitimate customers

Just double-clicking the fallout3.exe, (and FOMM since it loads directly) bypasses the disc check. I noticed this when I tried to pop open the launcher one day. It threw an error and made me say WTF?!
