It appears that the 'bureaucratic face-saving' bit of the article refers to Bangladesh rather than India.

Apparently, while H5N1 is fairly lethal to infected humans, it isn't particularly infectious to us. The threat is the potential for derivative strains that are both lethal and infectious.

As for how many cases would be expected, I have no idea, and wouldn't know where to look. You might be able to find something on the CDC's website. You might also try the WHO.

Thanks for the info and the update Satiarg,

I too have been watching this issue for a while.

Looking at human history however I come to the sad conclusion that we don't put up stoplights in intersections here in the U.S., until someone gets killed because that’s what it takes to justify the expense.

Prevention does not seem to be as important as the money it takes to implement it.

Look at New Orleans and Hurricane Katrina for this kind of attitude on a larger scale.

I know I sound cynical as hell, but I have been around the sun a few to many times, its just he truth.

I don’t like it, and I don’t agree with it, but that’s the way it is.

I appreciate your voice of conscious on these forums.

It will be people like you who will change the world.

Well Stormraven, I agree we can't just rely on the government to protect us. We must get informed and prepaired. Thanks for your kind words but I'm just a homeless bum with a laptop and way to much time on his hands.

A Bum is a person who does not think of any one but himself.

Their world revolves completely around them. You, my friend do not qualify.

You obviously care about the welfare of others.

Update:

BEIJING - China has confirmed that a father and son who were sickened with bird flu are the country's first infections within the same family, but said their cases showed no evidence that the virus has changed into a form that can easily be passed between humans, according to the World Health Organization.

The 24-year-old son from the eastern city of Nanjing died Dec. 2, becoming China's 17th fatality from the H5N1 bird flu virus. His 52-year-old father began showing symptoms a day later and was confirmed to have the disease.

State media said the man, identified only by his surname Lu, was released Dec. 26 after 20 days in a hospital.
