I have also found that keeping my "View Distance" at around 75% - 80% and turning OFF the "Full Time Shadows" option keeps crashes-to-desktop to a minimum without any detrimental effects in game play.
Modifying the Maximum FPS in the .ini file down to 60 or 80 also seems to help, as was suggested earlier.

Indeed it does, as far as I'v seen its Morrowind itself as Spudnik said. I'v played it on my computer (not even a year old, G3 graphic and the whole 9 yards) and I'v played it without plugins with the options changed around, sometimes it helps if its from going slow but normally its just the game itself. Same happens to a friend of mine.

well i have the same problem, its morrowind not ur computer.
as i have here a P4 2.6ghz, 512mb RAM, Geforce4 Ti 4200 computer, all specs are WELL above the ideal requirements for the game, yet i still get crashes to desktop now and then.
but it is a LOT worse at full view distance, i have it set 2 50% view distance and it crashes a lot less. ^_^

You might also find the following "Tweak Guide" helpful... The good stuff gets started on about page 5, but the whole thing is worth reading.
