Well, news time! First, something amusing. Chris Hecker decided to take the non-diplomatic approach a few days ago as he garrotted the Wii in public. Oh dear. After a quick visit from EA agents/thugs/angry Wii fan-mobs he decided to do a complete 180 on his opinions shortly after. Good work Chris, now you look dishonest too!
Now, on to the proper news. While, for some reason, there’s no coverage of the GDC 2007 speeches as of yet, some very short videos have popped up on YouTube showing each of the phases from the game. The cell phase has changed a lot visually since we last saw it. The creature phase seems to confirm the “slug” approach to the start of it. There’s no sight of underwater creatures… a wordless confirmation that they have been cut perhaps? The rest is just cool. Short, but sweet. Take a look:
Cell Phase
Creature Phase
Tribal Phase
Civilisation Phase
Galactic Phase
There are also some higher quality videos available, which will be added to the downloads database here ASAP… just having a few problems uploading them right now. Credit goes to Spore Universe for finding those.
Also, there have been a couple of short articles on Will Wright at the TED conference. Wired Blogs have done one, that while having no new information, does quote Will Wright as saying that Spore will have a “Septemberish” release date, which sounds pretty realistic to me - nothing’s for sure yet though. Ethan Zuckerman has also done a report on TED, which includes a shot of Will Wright’s arm in a super-sling as a result of a recent skiing accident… looks pretty nasty.
I’ve also added four images taken by someone called Rauva.
Last but not least, Spore Top Sites have been added to the affiliates list. Thought I may as well submit Spore Source there as well.
Phew, that’s about it for now. Enjoy!

The cell phase looks much better now!
The building and vehicle editors look very nice too.
Cool explosion at the end of the space phase. I hope the UFO can be customized as well. I bet you can.
When you said Wiincidents, I thought you were going to post something like this.
(By the way since when can you post as a guest?)

The UFO can be completely customised - if you look carefully there's a brief part of the galactic video where the UFO they use is being constructed in the UFO editor.
The Wiincident bit was a play on the real thing. Witty eh?
It seems there's also been a Gaming Steve GDC 07 podcast and some screenshots that I missed. Whoops. Haven't had the chance to listen to it yet. I'll have to make another news post later.

I like the frogelope thing! Don't suppose it's possible to make herbivores, though...
From an interview:

The designer then added a beaklike mouth to the front of the creature's body; apparently, the type, size, and shape of a critter's mouth will determine its diet (whether it's an herbivore, carnivore, or omnivore), as well as the sound of its voice (in our case, a birdlike squawk).
So yes, that's possible. Just killing each other for fun won't do.
