Hi, all.

I recently purchased the Fallout 3: GOTY Edition for the PC. While I got the main game disc to work (though not without having to fend off Sercurom first), I can't, for the life of me, get the DLC disc to work. I stick it in the drive, and I can hear the disc running, yet no menus pop up. And if I so much as click the mouse, my computer completely locks up and I'm forced to restart. Earlier today, I left the disc running in the drive for a little more than an hour, and still no dice.

The computer I'm using is a relatively-new PC running XP, and with as much free space as I need. My graphics card is a bit behind (new one to come soon), but I can't imagine it has anything to do with that. Does anyone have any idea what the hell might be up, or how I can fix this?

You might see your retailer about a replacement. My thinking is that you just got one of those bad discs. Of course, it might be that your drive doesn't like that disc, so stupid ol' Windows sits there trying over and over to mount the thing anyway. It can take a long long time for that to time out.

I've heard the Disk is making some checks before the setup is going to start. This may take even half an hour :/.
Sooo, I would try to install it from HD. Copy the entire content of the DVD to some folder and run the setup from there if possible.

This may sound dorky, but is there a way to keep the disc from actually running when it goes into the drive? Because then I can go about trying to run it in some other fashion. Otherwise, I'm just going to let the sonovabitch run while I'm at class tomorrow, and see what happens then.

In Windows, you have to go to Exploder and right-click on the CD-ROM drive and select "Properties". There may be an "Autoplay" option that will help you out, although I'm not sure. I don't normally use Windows except to play stupid games like this.

Or try looking in the "control Panel" with Vista it can be found in the "Classic view"

Fallout3 (and DLCs) + SuckuROM + Vista + UAC +HP DVD RWs (and maybe others) = described symptoms.

Disable Vista UAC. Restart. Try the disc in the drive again. If it continues, it (probably) isn't UAC, it's a SuckuROM vs. DVD firmware conflict. I got around that particular bugaboo by using my laptop's drive, networking it wirelessly (as a shared drive) and installing through the temporary "network."

Before installing any of the DLCs, make sure you upgrade Fallout3 to the 1.7 patch first.

Don't forget to kill the share and re-enable UAC when you are done.

Also, the problem seems to compound itself if installing to the default Program Files folder. Try something like C:\Games\Fallout3 instead (which is recommended practice anyway).

Well, as I said in the first post, I actually use XP.

Problem solved! All I had to do was run it in safe mode.
