I've been trying to get help for weeks from Bethesda but they don't seem able to get beyond "Update your drivers!" On my system, Fallout 3 runs great for up to an hour sometimes. At other times, it is prone to annoying glitches that reduce the refresh rate below one fps. Usually I can temporarily fix the problem by unloading and reloading the game, but when I have to do that every few minutes it really spoils the fun!
During a typical glitch, my Process Explorer shows that Fallout3.exe is consuming exactly 50% of processor time, even when the game is minimized. This is not the case when the game is running normally. There are no background processes hogging resources, and antivirus activity is suppressed while I'm running the game.
I'm running the latest version of XP, and my hardware is at or above the recommended requirements for this game. I have never had such a problem with any other software. And yes, all my drivers are the latest versions.
Any ideas on how to debug this annoying problem?
