Find a popular clan server run by a mature gaming clan that moderate their servers with proper rules and regulations and you'll avoid the majority of this. I only play on one DoD:Source server and it makes it much more enjoyable.
I'm surprised you can find a clan that is decent... Now that I think about it, why didn't I look up on Google/some kind of search engine thingy majig on FPS clans?

The NoBullSh-trepublic is a good community. www.nobullshitrepublic.com
They have two very good servers, one for normal Counter strike and one for the gun-game mod.
Yeah, CSS is a real pain, and so is Garrys mod. They're both full of litle annoying kids that think they should ALWAYS win.
CSS/CS 1. something is easily the worst out there.
Garry's mod is best played alone. I make dumb contraptions alone, I pose ragdolls in strange poses alone, I get killed alone. People bother trying to kill other players in Garry's mod!? Que amigo?

It depends on what you are playing as well. I remember in Red Faction it was ripe with cheaters and less than desirables, the few good servers were only good when an actual rcon was in the server playing. As for CS and CSS I played for about a week and got sick of all the cheating and smack talk, I stopped playing and never looked back. I played RvS for the longest time and that actually was a good game but it too had it's share of hackers and I-bullies and general butt heads. It was a game that relied heavily on sound and so if you found a server to play in and were on TS or Vent. nobody really talked until the round was over. That took a certain level of maturity. COD4 is a mix and eiehr hit or miss. I find that in COD4 it is the complaining of people dying certain ways that kind of grates on me.
FPS in general create a very competitive following and you would think that people would have the discipline to act in a way that is sporting and not like an ass. However with the wide range of ages, personalities, playing styles and attitudes conflicts and abuse are always there. That is why it takes a long time to find a clan/group that runs a server to your liking or specific tastes but when you do it is well worth the effort you put in to locating them.
I know on our COD4 server there is no swearing, no bunny hopping and you have to be respectful and courteous to the other players. You are warned once and then kicked. If you come back and do it again you are banned. You can join vent and swear all you want as long as you are not disrespectful about it. IE: getting shot and saying something like "you #$%^@#@, that was a nice shot" or whatever. But it is easier to do that in Vent or TS because you can hear the persons tone and mood when they say it and can tell if they are joking.
I would say your best bet is to join the TS or Vent server they have and get to know people. If you like the way they play chances are you will enjoy talking to them as well.
I also strongly agree with you on the co-op thing. If the game is co-op such as Vegas2 or L4D and you are playign with people you know it makes it that much more fun because you need each other to survive and thrive.
Bunny hopping? Vent or TS? (TS = Team Server?)
Halo CE (custom addition!) actually has a bit of a decent community, even if you don't go into a clan server... Old games are actually cool.
Also...
In CoD, that perk where you set a bomb/explode when you die is one of the most popular ways of getting kills... Which is why it needs to be removed. If it isn't already.
I sold my 360 to get a uber-computer, most of the games I play on it are also on the computer anyways. I can always just plug in a USB controller thingy anyway.
