Does 64 bit Vista really not work with games, specifically Oblivion and Fallout 3? I've heard varying reports on this.

Well yes, i would stick with xp tell windows 7 comes out, fallout 3 has many people complaining about issue's in the game like the fast cursor bug and many reports of crashing. Windows 7 no problem so far Also Oblivion i think it runs ok in Vista, but not quite sure, haven't played it on vista yet.

in your case since you bought a laptop i think oblivion runs ok in vista 64bit, its the only game i haven't had issue's with. in any other operating system, its stable in that case.

I even managed to get it running through wine in linux

I haven't bought the laptop yet. I'm going to see if I can get Vista 32 bit instead of 64 bit when I order it. That's what I'm using now, and it works fine(well, it used to work fine)

How much ram does your laptop have, if its 4gb then you should stick with the 64bit edition, plus you would have nice increase in fps in the 64bit edition.

I'm looking to play Fallout though too, so I don't think I'm going to get the 64-bit edition.

OK just remember if you have 4gb it'll only read the 3.

Yes, I knew that. There is a mod on the nexus that lets it use 4 gigabytes, but I don't think it's worth the extra hundred dollars.

why? it would be using a worsened XP, yet it seems MS do not allows new machines with XP (although it may be 'downgraded' afterwards)... 64 bits came to stay, there is no more room for 32 bits in the near future by a series of good reasons. If you are to have Vista on a 64 bits processor you must stick to it's 64 bits version. Alas the 32 bits have yet more issues than the 64 one and where the later can emulate 32 bits, the former can't emulate 64.

Something else to consider regardless if you go with 32-bit or 64-bit is that Windows 7 is just about to be released. If at all possible, I'd wait until that OS is released and purchase your hardware that comes with Windows 7. If you cannot wait, then make sure to check and see if you qualify for a free upgrade from Vista to Windows 7.

And as mentioned before, 64-bit Windows can install 32-bit software and run it but 32-bit Windows cannot run 64-bit software. Also, any 32-bit OS will be limited to a maximum of 3 GB of usable RAM no matter what edition you have. 64-bit does not have such a small limitation on the amount of RAM. I recommend getting 12 GB if you can.

It comes with a free upgrade to Windows 7. The reason I don't want 64 bit Vista is because there is a whole slew of problems associated with it and Oblivion.
